SEO methods can be classified as "legitimate, white hat" or "illegitimate, black hat." This judgment exists only from the search engine (SE) companies point-of-view. They approve of the former and disapprove of and will actively fight the latter.

The SEs and SEOs are adversaries because their missions are different. The SEs want to produce a quality service to attract customers and keep them loyal. This is done by providing fast, accurate, and relevant search results. Anybody scamming the system directly degrades their product.

Others include "spamdexing" which is the promotion of irrelevant pages through deceptive techniques, "cloaking" which is serving one page to spiders and another version to visitors, "keyword stuffing" which is inflating the use of key words throughout the content and meta tags, and many other diabolical and ingenious schemes.

You may be tempted to use the black hat methods. Be aware that if detected, and you probably will be, Google and the other SEs can de-list and ban your site. Permanently!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
